The family sponsorship program enables Canadian citizens and permanent residents to bring certain family members to Canada. It is also possible to apply for sponsorship under the spouse or common-law partner in Canada category when the sponsored person is in Canada. The sponsor must be at least 18 years old, reside in Canada, and demonstrate financial ability to support the sponsored person without having to rely on social welfare. Eligible family members include spouses, common-law partners, dependent children, parents and grandparents. The sponsor commits to a period of financial support that varies according to the family relationship. A formal commitment and proof of the relationship must accompany the application.

Sponsorship can involve several types of family members, including spouses, common-law partners, dependent children, parents and grandparents. However, some family members may not be eligible, such as non-dependent adult children, or people with a criminal record.

The sponsor must demonstrate that he or she is capable of providing for the sponsored person's financial needs, thus guaranteeing that he or she will not become a burden on the state. This obligation generally lasts for 3 to 10 years, depending on the relationship with the sponsored person.
